It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.[1] The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted “the American continental army” after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.[

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

Flag Day is not an official federal holiday. Title 36 of the United States Code, Subtitle I, Part A, CHAPTER 1, § 110[4] is the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the President’s discretion to officially proclaim the observance. On June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first (and only) U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday, beginning in the town of Rennerdale.[1] New York Statutes designate the second Sunday in June as Flag Day, a state holiday. [5]

Perhaps the oldest continuing Flag Day parade is at Fairfield, Washington.[6] Beginning in 1909 or 1910, Fairfield has held a parade every year since, with the possible exception of 1918, and celebrated the “Centennial” parade in 2010, along with some other commemorative events.

One of the longest-running Flag Day parades is held annually in Quincy, Massachusetts, which began in 1952, celebrating its 59th year in 2010.[7] The largest Flag Day parade is held annually in Troy, New York, which bases its parade on the Quincy parade and typically draws 50,000 spectators.

Best Friend Day June 8th

Best Friend Day is a time to enjoy and appreciate your best friend. It’s a day to honor and cherish the relationship.

If you’re lucky, you have a best friend. If you are real lucky, you have a number of best friends. Best friends are very, very special people. You spend countless hours with your best friend going to events and activities, or just hanging out. You share secrets, hopes, dreams, aspirations, and disappointments with your best friend.

Some folks say you can only have one best friend. This author disagrees. You can have a couple at the same time, or several over time. Friends come and go for a variety of reasons. It’s the result of many things, including moving, changing schools or jobs, and more. We hope that you are lucky enough to have a number of best friends over the years.

Celebrate Best Friend Day by:

Spending time with your best friend
Making efforts to find a best friend(if you don’t currently have one)
Giving a small gift or card to your best friend

Meaning: passionate love and beauty

The language of flowers developed during the highly conservative period of the Victorian era. The Victorians were strongly restricted by the rules of etiquette when it was considered totally inappropriate to express feelings of love or affection. The “Language of Flowers” therefore evolved when a message was assigned to specific flower such as the Rose. A lover could then send flowers which conveyed a hidden romantic meaning.

May 4 through May 12, celebrates nature’s bounty of wildflowers across the nation.

The first National Wildflower Week was launched in 1988 as the primary focus of the American Wildflower Society, which was founded the same year. A few years later the American Wildflower Society became defunct and the week languished in obscurity until revived by Charles Spencer to honor his mentor, Edward Piela, naturalist and botanist. At the request of Spencer, the Wildflower Center became the permanent home of NWW in 2003.

Some fun ideas on how to participate during National Wildflower Week include:

Participate in a Local Event

Chances are, there is a wildflower event happening in your neighborhood. Visit our National Organizations Directory (http://www.wildflower.org/organizations/) to find a native plant society, conservation group, botanical garden or other plant-related organizations in your neck of the woods.

Wildflower Walks and Garden Visits

Explore for yourself. Bring a field guide. Visit a sanctuary, state or local park, national forest or refuge, public or private garden, and other locations to experience the joy and beauty of wildflowers.

Wildflower Beautification Projects

Introduce native wildflowers along roadsides, in parks, and around church, public, and private buildings. Request government and private support for such projects. Encourage local nurseries and garden centers to stock native plants and seeds.

Celebrating Wildflowers

The national forests, national parks, national wildlife refuges, grasslands, and millions of acres of public lands are truly America’s wildflower gardens. Celebrating Wildflowers’ promotes the many programs featuring the important role that the Nation’s public lands, over 630 million acres, play in providing diverse habitats for much of America’s flora. Visithttp://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/index.shtml for more information.

National Nurses Week is one of the nation’s largest health care events, recognizing the contributions and commitments nurses make and educating the public about the significant work they perform. The American Nurses Association (ANA) supports and encourages National Nurses Week through state and district nurses associations, educational facilities, and independent health care companies and institutions. The week-long celebration is designed to accommodate the variety of schedules nurses are required to work.

Activities during National Nurses Week typically include banquets and recognition dinners, state and city proclamations, continuing education seminars, and other community events. Nurses are typically honored with gifts, dinners, and flowers by friends and family members, coworkers such as doctors and administrators, and patients who want to show their appreciation.

The history of Nurses Day can be traced back to 1953 when Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a “Nurse Day” in October of the following year. The proclamation was never made, but the following year National Nurses Week was observed from October 11 – 16, marking the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to Crimea.

In 1974, President Nixon proclaimed a “National Nurse Week.” In 1981, a resolution was initiated by nurses in New Mexico to have May 6th declared “National Recognition Day for Nurses.” This proposal was promoted by the ANA Board of Directors and in 1982, with a joint resolution, the United States Congress designated May 6th to be “National Recognition Day for Nurses.” The proposal was signed by President Reagan, making May 6 the official “National Recognition Day for Nurses.” It was later expanded by the ANA Board of Directors in 1990 to a week-long celebration (May 6-12) known as “National Nurses Week.”

National Student Nurses Day is celebrated each year on May 8th. At the request of the National Student Nurses Association, the ANA Board of Directors designated May 8thas National Student Nurses Day beginning in 1998. And as of 2003, the ANA has declared that National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week.

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on May 12th of each year. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) commemorates this day each year with the production and distribution of the International Nurses’ Day Kit which includes educational and public information materials for use by nurses everywhere. The ICN has celebrated International Nurses Day since 1965.

It allows us to express our individuality. Each generation of youth creates it’s own hairstyles, or come back to style that were popular years ago. We include among the hairstyles, hair coloring and shaved heads. After all, no hair is a hair style.

Perhaps the most famous hair style for women was the “beehive” of the fifties. During the same period, crew cuts were the cut of choice for the guys.

Celebrate today with a new hairstyle.
